The University of Zambia (UNZA) Library officially launched its new Indian Information Corner on Thursday, marking a major milestone in academic collaboration and cultural exchange between Zambia and India.
The dedicated space is the first designated international reading area within the UNZA Library, signaling a strategic push by the university to expand global engagement and enrich the research experience for students and faculty.
Speaking at the launch event, the Indian High Commissioner to Zambia, His Excellency Mr. Alok Ranjan Jha, praised the long-standing bilateral ties between the two nations and expressed optimism about using education to bring the countries closer together.
"This is one area we have not explored much, but I am happy that today we have decided to establish this corner," High Commissioner Jha said. "My country is ready to do more, and I hope that together we will work to grow this idea."
The High Commissioner also pledged continued support for joint initiatives aimed at driving social, economic, and educational growth. He noted that the corner will grant local researchers and students unprecedented access to India’s intellectual, scientific, and cultural history.
To anchor the new space, the High Commission of India donated a foundational collection of more than 80 books covering Indian history, literature, philosophy, science, and technology.
And UNZA Vice chancellor Prof Mundia Muya welcomed the addition, framing it as both a practical resource and a diplomatic symbol. Prof. Muya further described the information corner as an academic and cultural bridge that reflects UNZA's commitment to global learning.
Meanwhile, UNZA Chief Librarian Dr. Charles Banda emphasized that the collection will stimulate intellectual curiosity and expose users to diverse global perspectives. Dr. Banda added that the Indian Information Corner will complement existing international collections and serve as a blueprint for future cultural spaces within the library.
The launch is part of an ongoing effort by the UNZA Library to modernize its learning environments, strengthen international partnerships, and provide robust resources to support local innovation and research.
